Is Deism a religion?

Of course Deism is a religion!

Webster defines ‘religion’ in different ways.

One definition is: ‘a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature and purpose of the universe.’  Another is ’a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices agreed on by a number of persons or sects,’ while a third defines it as ‘something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience.’

Deism qualifies under all these definitions. The third in particular arises out of the derivation of  the word itself. ‘Ligare’ is Latin for to tie or to bind; it is the root of the word ligament.  ‘Re ligare’ means to rebind or reconnect.  A religion is that which binds us again and again i.e. the ideology that gives direction and meaning to our lives.

Bertrand Russell was probably the most famous opponent of Christianity during the twentieth century. His book ‘Why I…

A Deistic Perspective

Deism, a philosophical and spiritual belief system, champions the idea of a Creator who designed the universe but does not interfere with its functioning. Unlike theistic religions that rely on sacred texts and divine intervention, deism rests on reason, observation, and the natural laws that govern existence. This article delves into the principles of deism, explores its stance on gods and organized religion, and highlights its relevance in the modern world.

The Concept of God in Deism

In deism, God is perceived as the ultimate architect of the universe—a being of infinite intelligence who established the laws of nature and set the cosmos in motion. However, unlike the interventionist deity depicted in many theistic traditions, the deistic God does not perform miracles, answer prayers, or alter the course of events.

Deism is a religion

In my view, Deism is a religion. Indeed, all of the classical deists referred to it as a religion. They called it a natural religion. However, deism is not a revealed religion.

Thomas Paine called deism a religion. Thus, deism is both a religion and a philosophy. The only true religion is deism.

"The only religion that has not been invented, and that has in it every evidence of divine originality, is pure and simple deism." Thomas Paine

Am I Deist?

Am I deist? I believe in a Creator, God. Scientifically, there has to be a Creator of the Universe, and that creator is God. I do not, however, believe in religious faith such as the Bible, and I believe that God created the Universe but cannot actively intervene in it. Because if God could intervene, so many people wouldn't be suffering in the world.

Thanks, Perry. However I think that the Israeli perpetrators of genocide in Gaza are much, much, MUCH worse than the Hamas perpetrators. The people in Gaza had been living in a concentration camp, and the Hamas attack was not unprovoked. The Hamas perpetrators do not compare with the Israeli genocide perpetrators or with Hitler.
